Honduras Clean Water Project
The Honduras Clean Water Project began in 2006. We have provided clean water systems to 200 families or about 800 people in the villages surrounding Atima which is the base of our operation. We have specifically focused on families with young children in order to reduce chronic diarrhea illness that is extremely common in our Atima medical clinic.
Each water filter system is comprised of two plastic pails and two Katadyn ceramic water filters that are mounted into the top pail. Dirty water is poured into the top pail and is filtered over night into the bottom pail. Water is collected the next morning from a spigot mounted in the bottom pail. The life span of the filters is 10,000 gallons of water and should last each family for 2-3 years. The cost of each unit is $25.00
The Katadyn ceramic filters have been successfully used by the United Nations throughout the world and are effective in clearing water of bacteria and parasites. The systems were enthusiastically received by our families in Honduras and are extremely easy to use. We have hired a coordinator in Honduras who was selected by the mayor of Atima. Our coordinator will monitor the use of the filter systems to ensure that they are used correctly. He will also oversee the distribution of new filter systems during the year as money becomes available for their purchase. It is our goal to distribute another 500 units in the upcoming year.
