2008 Humanitarian Award

The Huarcay Project: Paving the Road to the Future This year's Humanitarian Award was presented to Hector M. Tarraza at our Annual Charity Ball held in November. He was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and attended Harvard University and Harvard Medical School. He completed an OBGYN residency and Gynecologic Oncology fellowship in the Harvard Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women's Hospital Combined Harvard Program in Boston, Massachusetts.

He is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of OB/GYN at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. His many accomplishments include an $80 million Women and Infants Center, the development of subspecialty programs such as the first in vitro fertilization program in Maine, and the growth of the largest and most comprehensive GYN Oncology program in Northern New England. From over 5000 hospitals, his department was recently named one of the Top 50 Hospitals in Gynecology in the United States by US News and World Report.

Dr. Tarraza has been The Huarcay Project: Paving the Road to the Future recognized nationally being named among America's Top Doctors in OB/GYN, and has received awards for Distinguished Service to Healthcare Philanthropy and Community Excellence.

His real passion is medical mission work. He has volunteered his time, medical expertise and energy for the last fifteen years serving those living in poverty in Peru, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Brazil and Columbia. Dr. Tarazza has gone on countless missions with several organizations including Global Health Ministry and Hands Across the Americas.

Hands Across the Americas is honored to benefit from his leadership and enthusiasm. Dr. Tarazza is a true champion of the poor.
